Patrick Chan takes gold at figure skating world championships

Patrick Chan successfully defended the World Figure Skating Championships on Saturday in Nice in a solid free skate.

Skating is the Adagio from Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodriguez, Chan was flawless in his opening four-jump and landed on his other quad company.

The program was not without problems. Chan will stand upright for the Triple-double Salchow, and he fell down before getting in the air is a double Axel company.

21-year-old Toronto recovered fine footwork and landed on his final jump to secure the title.

Chan finished 176.70 points for free, when his total is 266.11.

He won his first title in Moscow last year.

Japan took the other spots on the podium.

Former world champion Daisuke Takahashi was the second-259.66, moves one place short program Friday.

Countryman Yuzuru Hanyu was a joyful way to the podium after the medals ceremony, going seventh to third with a total of 251.06 points.

Michal Brezina of the Czech collapsed, going for a second after the short program for seventh place overall.

Kevin Reynolds is a Coquitlam, BC, finshed 12 and 217.20 points, which guarantees the three types of men's competition next year, when the world come to London, Ont.

It was not a good day for Americans. Jeremy Abbott was the eighth, when Adam Rippon was 13. They were the fifth and sixth respectively last year's worlds.

Chan, 11, achievement represents the win 26 World Cup for Brian Orser's 1987 victory. Kurt Browning (four), Elvis Stojko (three) and Canada's Jeffrey Buttle won.

Donald Jackson and Don McPherson won the gold in Canada in the early 1960s.
