Josh Powell: "I'm sorry, goodbye" note left before killing himself, kids in house blast

"I'm sorry, goodbye," is what Josh Powell wrote in a farewell note to attorney just minutes before police say he set fire to his home Sunday, killing his two young sons.

The past two years, Powell has been scrutinized in the media, hammered by police and questioned by judges, prosecutors and social workers from the day his wife vanished in 2009.

The alleged murder-suicide happened just days after he was denied custody and ordered to undergo psycho-sexual evaluation.

The deadly fire in the town of Powell gave another twist in the public scandal that began when Susan Powell vanished. The saga of alleged cases of sex and lies and now the loss of two young boys caught in the middle.

A social worker brought home the two boys Powell on Sunday for what was supposed to be on supervised visits. They rushed towards the town, leaving the worker behind. By the time she got to the door, she was locked out Powell, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz said.

The social worker called to report to supervisors she smelled gas. Moments later, the home burst into flames. The blast was so severe, neighbors said it rattled their homes.

Pierce County sheriff spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer said he had seemed to some sort of accelerant used to burn the house faster. He said Powell sent e-mails just before the blaze appeared to confirm Powell planned on the fire.

Reported Susan Powell, 28, missing on Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up to work in Utah.

Josh Powell quickly became a person of interest in the case, but was repeatedly denied any involvement on her request, saying that he was out camping with their two sons when she went missing. He was the only "person of interest" in the case.

"I would not even hurt it," said deorach Josh Powell with CBS 'The Early Show in August. "People know me that I was never hurt Susan," he said.

On Monday, the attorney for the parents said Susan Powell, a Chuck and Judy Cox, Press the children started talking to the grandparents about things they remembered from the night her mother disappeared.

"They were starting verbalize more," said attorney Steve Downing. "The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and Mom was in the trunk. Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom is gone."

In a statement Sunday evening from West Valley City police, the authorities said the investigation is still ongoing and are working to find Susan Powell. He said that Utah was led police to Washington state to work with investigators in the ongoing probe.

Kirk Graves, 39, of West Jordan, Utah, with his wife and sister of Josh Powell, said they were stunned by the news.

"We were concerned with the idea he would do something like this. You do not expect it from his father," he said. "Her life is happening around him and he was going to lose your boys and get caught Susan cancellation. It narcissist and has no love for anyone but himself."
