A Beastie Boy's Death: What Is Salivary Gland Cancer?

It is afar rare for people to be diagnosed with saliva gland mass measurement cancer. Most Americans who get it are older than the 55th

Adam Yauch, better known as "MCA" of the Beastie Boys, died Friday aged 47 after cancer for almost three years. Yauch was one of the few young patients with the disease.

Two adults in 100,000 are diagnosed with saliva gland mass measurement cancer annually, according to American Cancer Society.

"Parotid cancers are fairly unusual in general, but it can appear in individuals of all ages," said Dr. Amy Chen, head and neck cancer surgeon at Emory University in Atlanta. "It's just in general, parotid cancer is very rare."

Yauch said in July 2009 he took the first lump in his throat "like you have swollen glands." He announced that he would have surgery within a week, after nearly two months of local radiation therapy. He said the cancer was also in the lymph nodes. Survival depends on whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. If it has not, to five-year estimated survival rate (Stage I) is 91%. If it has spread far from the gland (stage IV), the ratio is 39%.

"I always advise people that if you have a lump in the throat or mass that is growing in size and it has not gone away after two weeks, you should consult a doctor because," Chen said. "If your doctor prescribes antibiotics for it and it's not getting better, you need to find another doctor."

If surgeons can not completely remove the cancer from the adrenal gland may spread to the lungs and other parts of the body, she said.

Since cancer is rare, it has been difficult for scientists to figure out what causes it. There are several risk factors, cancer society says one who has a radiation treatment of head and neck for other medical reasons. Workplace exposure may also increase risk.

"We do not find any association with smoking or alcohol use as any other head, neck, throat cancer," Chen said. "It's really a little bit of unknown to the risk factors for developing this disease."

Most saliva gland mass measurement of cancer arising in one of the parotid gland, which Yauch's made, just in front of your ears. It is difficult surgery to remove cancer cells, because the facial nerve passes through the parotid, according to Cancer website.

The site says both surgical techniques and radiation treatments have improved in recent years. Unfortunately, the relative drug not be very effective in measuring saliva glands the size of cancer.
